Sleep Difficulties Can Make Men Less Potent: Study

You don’t have to be a doctor to understand why sleep is so important. After all, virtually everyone knows how hard it is to get through the day when we fail to get an adequate amount of slumber. Sadly, research indicates that sleep deprivation can also compromise our health by leaving us more susceptible to deadly health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, dementia and cancer. Now, a new study suggests that insufficient sleep can also make it more difficult for men to father children.

Less Potent

Sperm-eggPrevious studies have demonstrated that insufficient sleep has the power to lower testosterone levels in men, making them less virile. Now, a Danish study has shown that it can also make them less potent by reducing sperm counts. Appearing in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the research involved over 950 men, who offered semen and blood samples. After asking every subject questions about their sleeping habits, the researchers noticed a significant link between low sperm counts and shorter sleep durations. In fact, less sleep resulted in a 29 percent reduction in sperm; it also appeared to promote sperm dysfunction, which can make it more difficult for conception to occur.

Numerous Problems

This recent study is just one small example of how sleep deprivation can negatively impact our health. A mountain of research has shown that insufficient sleep can leave us more vulnerable to medical problems that can shorten our lives. Although some people may take this evidence as motivation to adopt smarter habits which support better sleep; some are trapped in a seemingly unending struggle against sleep disorders which make it nearly impossible for them to remain asleep at night.
